Canna planting guide
Canna bulbs are tropical plants known for providing long lasting color as other flowers struggle thru late summer heat waves. They can bloom well into Fall in many parts of the US and Canada.
Plant cannas in the Spring when soil temps reach 60 degrees. Canna Lilies planted in USDA zones 8 and warmer can be left in the ground all winter. Lifting cannas in late Fall (ideally after first frost) is necessary to overwinter in zones 6 and colder. Plant horizontally with the eyes facing up and cover with 4’’ of soil, plant 1 ft apart. Canna Lilies will perform best if planted in a sunny spot with direct sunlight and organically rich, well drained soil. Deadhead the flowers throughout the growing season to keep cannas blooming for as long as possible.
