Allium in general is a genus of flowering plants with some famous family member, like garlic chives and onion. That is why the beauty of the flower is so unexpected. The flower Allium is specifically cultivated as ornamental and is loved by many for its architectural qualities. A large flower on top of a sturdy stem makes an interesting eye catcher in borders and parks. There are many different species, shapes and colors to pick from, so choose which one will compliment your project the most. They are hard to quantify but most sources agree there are as many as 750 different kind of Allium. Ruigrok Flowerbulbs carries around 25 Allium varieties.
Allium flowers
Some species of Allium have a flower that can measure up to 15 centimeters in diameter, which is an impressive sight. The plants itself can reach a height of 3 to 4 feet! An explosion of little flowers in the sphere-shaped flower is what makes the Allium so special. Other species are smaller and understated with tiny flowers in blue or purple. Whichever way you look at it, alliums are an amazing addition to your landscape project. Ruigrok Flowerbulbs has selected a few to highlight the variety of this species.
Giant Alliums
The Giant Alliums, as the name says, is the largest variety of the Allium family. The ball shaped flowers come in different colors, ranging from magenta to lilac and white. They are very good for attracting butterflies and the Mont Blanc variety can even attract hummingbirds. We especially like Allium Ambassador, that has very dense, dark purple flowers.
Medium and Miniature Alliums
Smaller in size, but with bigger flowers these Alliums are very different from their big brothers in the Allium Giant family. They come in many happy colors such as yellow, pink and blue.
Extra benefits and facts
Alliums are very pest-proof and will withstand a lot of the common garden and park hazards such as deer and rodents and are thus a good way to keep these at distance. This late Spring to late Summer bloomer is a hardy flower which grows very well by itself as long as it is not planted in a spot that is very wet. And don’t you agree that they just look like fireworks frozen in the middle of the most beautiful part of the explosion?
